BEE 468/568 - Bioremediation Engineering

Course Description


Engineering aspects of using microorganisms and plants for the remediation of contaminated soil, sludge and groundwater.  Topics include microbial systems, site characterization, treatability studies, bioremediation processes, phytoremediation, and management of a bioremediation project.

Course Objectives


The undergraduate student, upon completion of this course, should be able to:

  • Classify the main sources of contaminants and the environments where bioremediation is used.
  • Develop management plans for bioremediation projects.
  • Understand the basic microbial systems and requirements for successful bioremediation.
  • Identify parameters for characterizing contamination sites.
  • Use test protocols for evaluating the treatability of contaminants.

The graduate student will also be able to:

  • Identify appropriate approaches for the remediation of soil, sludge and groundwater.
  • Design test protocols for evaluating the treatability of contaminants.
